He told me that he had a dream about me last night. I asked him what happened in the dream and he said "I don’t remember but we banged at one point. It was just a dream but it was hot haha." I told him I’m not easy and he said that he likes a challenge and is up for it.

It was really random of him. He doesn’t seem like the douchey type that is only out for just sex so I’m kind of surprised he would say that.

What is the point in him telling me that he had a dirty dream about me?

Sorry to break it to you, but only reason he said that was to test the waters with you because he just wants to bang you. It’s also apparent when he said he like a challenge when you told him you are not easy. Horny teenagers are so predictable.

But it had me wondering – why do you think it’s considered nerdy to read or write? Do you think it’s because of stereotypes and stigmas? Or is it psychological?

Let’s not lash out at society. Let’s try to get some well-thought-through answers. I reckon this would be interesting to explore, haha!

Well, at my school, there are at least four writers (including myself) that are open about it. It’s not nerdy too much at my school. However, I think it’s because there are so many other, better forms of entertainment than reading and writing. For example, a good game of Halo or CoD:BO. And let’s not forget, books like Percy Jackson, the Inheritance Cycle, and Dragon Riders of Pern can be considered nerdy because of their high fantasy style. And a lot of people generalize because of that.

EDIT: I’m not saying that they are nerdy books. I am saying that this is the opinion of the normal people.

Oh, no – perhaps I should elaborate. It doesn’t bother *me* specifically. I’m pretty happy with what I do, no question there. This is about the whole concept of "it’s nerdy to write", and why that stigma exists.

The explanation (to me) is rather simple. Writers write. Writing, in the first place, is considered a mostly ‘dreary’ and boring activity. People groan when people announce that I have to write anything over 200 words long, and writers write over TWO THOUSAND WORDS, DAILY (or at least weekly, if you’re on the slob-side).

The google definition of a nerd is ‘A contemptible person lacking in social skills and/or is boringly studious.’ Its interesting to note that the second definition is: ‘An intelligent, single-minded expert in a particular technical discipline or profession’
All of this is at least partly true. Dedicated writers will devote more of their time to apparently ‘boring’ activities (writing/brainstorming/planning) rather than social activities. This doesn’t mean we have fail social skills though, writers are the most interesting and wonderful people I know. But then, I am also a writer, so this is a rather biased opinion.
As for the second…all accomplished writers (where accomplished refers to your ability to create a sturdy and riveting plot, as well as use proper grammar and spelling), are relatively intelligent, either naturally, or from the years of practicing they’ve put into perfecting this art. As a writer continues in their work, they mature and become experts in writing styles, writing cliches, writing tropes, little tricks of the trade… Writers as a whole, (dare I say this) are some of the most focused and devoted people to their work – and why wouldn’t they? They’re creators of entire worlds that they control!

BQ 1: I had chickens too! I named them: Miss Macbeth, Glen Iris, the Grim Cheeper and Terminator. There was another one, but she died ): I was going to name her Sephiroth. Give my dead chicken the honour of having another chicken live out their life with her name? ):
BQ 2: Mango Juice. I crave mango juice whenever I am feeling hot/angry/sad/worried/sweaty. ;D
BQ 3: Ssossity. Its an arbitrary word, used whenever you have nothing else to ssossity, because you’re way too ssossity to ssossity.

So why is it considered nerdy? Yet there are really stupid sitcoms on TV, and people are head over heels for them.

I don’t watch anime myself, but I am very interested in Japanese culture and have a few theories as to why anime is considered "nerdy".

For one thing, people who watch anime and read manga are, for the most part, self-proclaimed nerds. They enjoy considering themselves "おたく" (otaku, Japanese word for nerd) and don’t see it as an insult. Therefore, when others consider their interests, they consider them to be "nerdy", as well.

Part of it may be due to cosplaying and anime conventions, as well. We don’t have those for many other things in America and to Americans, parading around in a Sailor Moon outfit could be not only seen as degrading but borderline obsessive, though the practice itself is not too uncommon.

Furthermore, take a look at the characters themselves. Big eyes, flamboyant characteristics regarding hairstyles and outfits, short skirts on schoolgirls to attract the men, handsome faces on men to attract the girls, and overall "kawaii" (cute) appearance. In Japan, this sort of style is seen as normal for all ages. In America, it is seen as a little babyish.

These are my theories as to why people consider anime/manga to be "nerdy". Hopefully this doesn’t discourage you from reading/watching, though!
