Obama deserves a lot of credit for cancelling these WASTEFUL NASA programs. Why are we exploring other worlds when we have starving people, homeless people back on THIS WORLD. Once we have solved all the problems here, I could see going to go find some other worlds… but until then, why waste all this money on a bunch of white scientists? Apollo was one thing, it helped win the cold war. But theres NO REASON for space exploration today. Obama saved us BILLIONS by canceling these programs!!

@quantumG – I agree. That’s why I’d rather NASA stick with Constellation/Ares or at least DIRECT/Jupiter. Not only are they well thought-out plans with a destination they require a lot less work than trying to man-rate an EELV then expand an EELV into a “Saturn-class” HLV. The latter thing with an EELV would probably be more expensive than just creating the Ares V or the Jupiter-246/232 which start out as Saturn-class HLVs to begin with.

The comment at 16:02 is reasonable. Even the most enthusiastic and the most capable of the private space launch companies are balking at the development of a Saturn class vehicle. They’ve even co-opted “heavy” to mean “not Saturn class”
If you were going to try to do it with existing EELVs you’d have to launch your lander in two parts.. and not just ascent and descent stages. This would probably require EVAs to assemble, and that’s a no-no.
